Kick Off Your Summer Right

Memorial Day Weekend is the offical kick-off to Summer and a great day to remember our Veterans, military heros, and our loved ones. Head to one of these great events this holiday weekend and enjoy Memorial Day to the Fullest.

Events at the National WWI Museum

  • May 24th: “Liberty for All” Lecture Series: ''Borrowed Soldiers: Americans under British Command, 1918
    Free lecture by Mitch Yockelson, 11am.
    Free Movie: “The Great War, the Great Movies”
    'The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Volume Two, The War Years', Noon.

  • May 25th and 26th:
    Vintage Military Vehicle Display
    The Military Preservation Society displays vintage military vehicles on the southeast lawn

  • Memorial Day Observance Ceremony - Monday, May 26 Events begin at 9:30am and includes a parade of color guards from local military, ROTC, and Boy Scouts organizations. New walk of Honor bricks will be dedicated. The event lasts about an hour and is held on the south lawn closest to the Memorial.

  • The WWI Museum, which is closed on Mondays, will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please note: Regular admission fees will be charged during Memorial Day. Free parking will be available at the Hallmark parking lots off of Grand & 27th Street. Shuttles will run 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.

  • Celebration at Union Station , May 25th
    This FREE outdoor concert marches to the tune of our patriotic favorites and is directed by the Kansas City Symphony's Michael Stern. Don't miss the finale--with live cannons and one of the biggest fireworks displays in Kansas City.

  • Visit the Vietnam Veterans Fountain and Memorial, 43rd and Broadway.

    2008 Memorial Day Flag Event, Historic Elmwood Cemetery, 4900 Truman Road

  • Great American BBQ Fest at the Woodlands , May 23-25th
    With awesome BBQ, tasting tent, live music and hot air balloons, the fest is a great kick off to Memorial Day Weekend.

  • Amy Thompson Run to Daylight , May 26th, Loose Park, 8am.

  • The Great American Greyhound Race at the Woodlands.

  • Abdallah Shrine Rodeo Leavenworth County Fairgrounds (location has changed this year!), May 22-24th

  • Jackson County Beaches Open This Weekend
