Summer in Kansas City:
When you live in Missouri, you can almost always expect heat advisories, triple digit temperatures and the possibility of heat stroke and heat exhaustion during the summer months. From summer safety tips and neighborhood cool off centers to where to obtain a free fan (or donate to those in need), we've got everything you need to keep you cool in KC.
Heat Safety :
It unfortunately happens almost every year-the Kansas City heat wave. While it usually occurs in July or August, you can also expect 100+ degree weather lasting for many days as early as June and sometimes as late as September.
According to the American Red Cross, Follow these Heat Safety Tips
- Wear lightweight, light colored and loose fitting clothing
- Stay hydrated
- Eat smaller meals more often
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol and carbonated beverages
- Take Regular Breaks
- Slow Down: If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, usually in the morning between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m
Neighborhood Cool Centers:
The Salvation Army has 8 local cool centers, all of which will be open from 8 am until at least 5 pm until the heat advisory is cancelled.Salvation Army Cool Center Locations:

The Roger T. Sermon Community Center (201 N. Dodgion St., Independence)will also serve as a Cool Center from 8am-10pm, M-S and Noon-6pm, Sun.
Olathe Main Library :
The Olathe Main Library (201 E. Park St., Olathe) is also opening its doors as a cooling center this week. The library will function as a cool center from 9am-9pm, Tuesday-Thursday, 9 am to 6 pm Friday. Please bring personal items.Fan Clubs and Other Assistance:
The Channel 9 Fan Club--The Fan Club has donated free fans to low income families for over a decade.

To donate a fan, call (816)968-9000. Used units are not accepted.Salvation Army Fan Club- offers free fans as well as a/c units to families with children that have medical needs. For more information, or to donate, call 816-756-2769.
Neigbors4Neighbor --delivers free sandwiches and bottled water to residents in need in the NKC, River Market, and Plaza areas.
