Kansas City Roller Warriors Roller Derby

Kansas City Roller Warriors :

Whomever started the rumor that Roller Derby wasn't real, obviously hasn't been to a match. Judging by the recent Kansas City Roller Warrior Championship--Roller Derby isn't a bunch of ladies skating around in cute outfits, but a knock-down drag-out bit of fabulousness. With body checking, elbows flying and a bit of trash talking, it's full contact sport at it's finest. Judging by names like Bruz-her, Maiden Hell and Whoopie Yoasis, there girls aren't messing around..they're in it to win it.

KC Roller Warrior History :

It was the Spring of '04 when Brooke Leavitt semi-jokingly tossed around the idea of starting a women's Roller Derby league in the Kansas City Metro to pal and co-worker Mandy Durham. After contacting the famed Texas Roller Girls, the two, and a dozen or so others began practicing in a parking lot and the Kansas City Roller Warriors were born. The league has grown to 50+ participating members with 4 teams: The Black-Eye Susans, Dreadnought Dorothys, The Knockouts and Victory Vixens.

Championship Bout and Grudge Match:

Last weekend the gang went to see what all the hoopla was about. As children of the 80's, we grew up watching Roller Derby on USA on Saturday mornings. While most KCRW bouts are held at Winwood Skate Center, the girls were having their Championship Bout and Grudge Match at Hale Arena. As we entered, we didn't exactly know what to expect-but as we got closer, we could hear the screaming, roaring, and stomping in anticipation of what was to begin. It was the BEST $12 I've spent in a long time.

Trust me, It's Real :

Now while there might be some theatrics involved... the pushing, shoving, tripping, and falling is legit. As elbows were flying and women were slamming to the concrete, you could see their faces cringe with pain as the crowd screamed with satisfaction. Reading through the KCRW program most of the Derbians had serious bruises--while a handful had broken their legs, arms and had stitches more than once. Seriously, how many people do you know that break an appendage for fun?

Roller Derby 101:

Contrary to popular belief, there are actual rules to Roller Derby. To the average person, it looks like a lot of chaos...

The Basics:

  • Five skaters from each team are allowed on the track at once.
  • Each team has a jammer, the designated scorer who wears a star on her helmet.
  • The other four are the 'Blockers' and make up the pack.
  • The 1st whistle is blown and the 'pack' begins to skate.
  • The Jammer skates after the second whislte.
  • Jammers score points by passing the blockers of the opposing team.

Bout Schedule and Location:

The KCRW matches are held at Hale Arena (next to Kemper).

Roller Derby Rebirth...:

Finally, Roller Derby surely isn't for sissys and by the looks of things--is making a serious comeback throughout leagues that are forming in major metros around the US. But this time around one thing is for sure...these Derby girls aren't wearing terry cloth.
