Guide Review - Cheesehead Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
On a recent Monday lunch hour, my three year old and my parents hopped into Cheesehead and were thrilled to walk in to see a line of lunch goers and every seat practically taken. Cheesehead is located at 16th and Grand, across from the new/old Star building which is perfect for the downtown lunch crowd, and we saw lots getting it to go.Cheesehead's menu consists of a great array of sammies. Go for the mouth watering Classic-with cheddar, provolone, mozzarella and swiss on texas toast ($5.49) or be adventurous and get the KC BBQ with Smoke Daddy BBQ Sauce Beef with Cheddar (6.49). You can also build your own by choosing 1 meat, 2 cheeses and any bread of your liking. Cheesehead rounded out their menu with breakfast sammies, starters (blue cheese and kettle chips), salads and soups.
We all ordered 'The Vee', a grilled cheese with havarti, provolone, peppers, onions, sun dried tomatoes and mushrooms. I went with sourdough. Served with chips (or cottage cheese) the sandwich was big enough to take home half (of course I didn't!). The veggies were raw, I was expecting grilled--but it didn't disappoint. The crunch of the onions and mushrooms complimented the yummie melting of cheese.
As I waited for our order, I had to laugh as the kitchen staff and the counter folks danced around to Outkast's 'Hey Now' among assorted downtown professionals and Crossroad arties. They weren't just making grilled cheese-- they were having a blast. Now, that's my kind of Cheesy joint.
