The Bottom Line

If you can't quite make it out of the Midwest and are looking for a beach like haunt- Sol Cantina, the latest addition to the Martini Corner, is just the spot. Luckily for us, Sol Cantina's owners have expertly brought the 'beach' to 31st street by transforming an old garage next to the Velvet Dog into an open-air beach bar-esq paradise. It's classic San Diego Pacific Beach meets Cabo Wabo..in that "I want to skip work on Friday and sip Margaritas all day" kind of way.
Pros
  • Great open air restaurant and bar makes you feel like you're in Cabo!
  • Delicious food with such big portions... you'll be taking some home.
  • Great hang-out spot with huge patio and tiki bar to boot.
Cons
  • Packed on weekends, so stake out your patio seat EARLY.
  • Watch out- you might want to skip work and hang out all day.

Guide Review - Sol Cantina

Sol Cantina's concept is a unique one, they took an old garage and magically transformed it into one of the city's best chill out spaces. With 2 huge doors that open in the front and one that completely opens up in the back--what you've got is a perfectly designed open air bar with a back patio, tiki bar and a breeze that will make you feel like you're hanging out at a beach side lounge spot (sans the beach).

Sol's food is hard to beat--and they offer plenty of it. Try noshing on the Mucho Nacho's or Quesadilla's to start, although, you might not be hungry enough at that point to attempt an entree. Sol offers a great array of taco's, wraps and Southern Cali/ Tex Mex fare. You seriously can't pass up 'Sol's Famous Fish Taco's'..it's THREE huge tilapia filled morsels with shredded cabbage, avocados and a perfectly spicy chipotle sauce ($8.99). It's quite possibly the biggest (I took the third one home) and best I've had in the city. Also try Sol's 'Monster Taco'--a mammoth fried tortilla stuffed to the max with chicken, lettuce and the works.

All in all, Union Hill's newest spot is the perfect place for eating, drinking and having fun. Sol's laid back atmosphere is great for getting out of your cubicle and heading to lunch or gathering your friends and hunkering down with margarita's and beer until they tell you to leave. Any way you have it-head to Sol Cantina and you just may forget we're landlocked.
